A Emotional Occasion as Liam Rosenior Overcomes Obstacles

"Liam Rosenior is an excellent coach that understands the game inside out, and that's the crucial factor.

"However, in my role as Chelsea's first African heritage footballer, it would be dishonest to claim this moment fails to move me."

Those are the words expressed by the former Chelsea winger, the man who earned his groundbreaking debut for Chelsea's senior side off the bench back in the spring of 1982.

On Tuesday, the club hired Strasbourg boss Rosenior, aged 41, as their new manager following the exit of manager Enzo Maresca.

The French club is within the multi-club ownership group which also owns the London club.

Statistics show a mere twelve of African or Caribbean heritage managers – not including those in temporary caretaker positions – in the Premier League since its inception thirty-four in the past.

"One thing that impresses me about Liam is he grew up and played not far from here, he understands this area," added Canoville.

"When youngsters observe someone like Liam managing the team they support, someone who looks like them, from a similar background, from a family that champions what's right… it is powerful and shows them the path is there.

"So yes, it is a massive moment for Chelsea, for the capital, for every aspiring individual with big dreams.

"However, currently? We must support Rosenior, give him the necessary tools, and allow him to do his work."

What Do the Numbers Reveal?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became the Blues' manager back in the nineties and became the top flight's first black manager.

Twelve years later, by 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first English black boss in the Premier League when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo is the only other current Premier League gaffer of colour.

The scarcity of ethnic minority managers across English football is matched by a lack of representation in the boardroom.

As per a BFP 2023's study, forty-three percent of Premier League players come from black heritage.

Yet, analysis from the equality organization revealed only 3.2 percent of executive and leadership management teams across most Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse communities.

Regarding senior coaching positions, based on figures from eleven clubs, the percentage stands at 2%.

Across all coaching roles – including senior roles – from those same 11 clubs, the statistic is five percent.

"He has undoubtedly broken barriers in terms of him being announced as Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we hope to see more of that," stated the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged there is a wealth of ability that exists within ethnic minority communities... aspiring coaches desire the opportunity to show what they can do. It is imperative to persist in striving to dismantle those barriers down."

Additionally, the new appointee will become one of only four permanent British head coaches presently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that trails the continent's other big five divisions in terms of national representation.

16 of the 20 top-flight managers in Serie A are Italian, 11 of the 20 are Spanish, 12 in the Bundesliga are German while Ten of the 18 in France.

The present Chelsea caretaker manager Calum McFarlane said: "I have no doubt all young English coaches from an academy background will be, in some way no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It is really motivating for young English coaches in the system to see an individual land such a role with his background and everyone hopes he will be really well."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is due to ability'

His father, Leroy, Liam's father, played for clubs such as West London clubs, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers, and his coaching stint culminating in a brief spell at then-League One side Brentford FC in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded an MBE in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered to tackling discrimination within the sport and wider society.

After Liam retired from playing he followed a path in management. He began penning a column for The Guardian, and in one piece he acknowledged the under-representation among managers. He pointed out that ethnicity does not determine ability and said opportunities should be given on merit.

He further expressed the view he would repeat: how significant under-representation leads to misunderstandings regarding footballers with diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

During an interview with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted the way his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "hard to manage" or "passionate", but said he could relate to the Netherlands international with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to follow him in moving from Strasbourg to Chelsea in July.

In subsequent Guardian columns, Rosenior also admitted he was "ashamed" upon hearing an unnamed staff member utter a discriminatory remark. He vowed support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces initiative and authored an open letter to Donald Trump while he was in office, condemning his "overt" prejudice.

He has subsequently made his name as a manager – initially with Hull City, then Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" after their time together at Derby County.

Rosenior said goodbye at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term contract at Chelsea.

Chelsea boasted the top flight's pioneering black manager with Gullit and the first black skipper in Paul Elliott.
