British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect behind a series of unforgettable images associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
