California is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Time in Two and a Half Decades.

After a quarter-century span, every region of California is experiencing water scarcity. This landmark event comes on the heels of challenging years marked by a lack of precipitation that intensified wildfire risks and pressured its huge agribusiness.

An Update Shows Zero Drought

A recent update from the national drought tracker showed that all of California is without any level of drought. This development came after weeks of significant storms that helped fill key lakes like Oroville and Shasta exceeding their long-term norms.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve spent your life in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” noted a weather expert.

Following Powerful Weather to Rainy Seasons

Achieving this status included powerful and fatal winter storms that pummeled the state in recent years, resulting in widespread flooding, electrical failures, and tragic losses. Even though those events helped ease the drought, they did not eliminate it.

As late as late December, areas like northeastern California were considered unusually parched. Substantial precipitation at the onset of 2026 washed away those remaining dry spots.

The Vital Sierra Snow Presents a Challenge

However, hydrologists note that the end of drought status should not be confused with being out of the woods. Latest data of the Sierra Nevada snowpack indicate it is approximately 70 percent of the historical norm.

This frozen reservoir, which supplies about a third of the state's usable water as it thaws later in the year, is a key piece for the year ahead. Water officials stress that it is too early to make predictions for the annual water supply.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” said a hydrology section chief. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to improve by 1 April so that we’re nearer to normal.”

Even as the official status is entirely green, the focus now shifts to preserving this hard-won hydrological health during the rest of the year.
