“That was unfortunate. That was kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
Jones additionally emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the incorrect digit,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases involve:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in early 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, so the fine manageable for the wealthy owner.
