The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
