American flight controllers are increasingly seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has stated.

"These professionals are becoming strained," the official informed Fox News on Sunday, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were told to continue performing their jobs uncompensated.

But some have been absent, causing terminals to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks due to weather and other issues.

More than three thousand US flights were postponed on the weekend, and Duffy said he expects the situation to deteriorate further.

"I observe the pressure," he said in an interview on a weekend program, adding that he had spoken to multiple professionals to hear their concerns firsthand.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I drive Uber, am I able to secure another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airfields said travel would be delayed due to a shortage of employees - among the peak since the closure began.

The American federal closure entered its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, making it the second-longest halt in history.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would reduce the number of planes in the sky if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his conversation, he would not answer directly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead made a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I require my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at home," Duffy said.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at LAX due to staffing shortages, leading to disruption at the fifth-busiest airport in the country and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as additional travel extending upward to the city of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert went out at 08:45 local time on the weekend. Numerous trips were operating normally by midday.

Travel at Newark Liberty International Airport, though, were delayed an average of over an hour due to staffing shortages, and the FAA indicated DFW, the second-busiest airfield in the US, could encounter problems from low staffing in the afternoon.

The FAA warned travelers in California to consult carriers about updated flight schedules.

The issue precedes the third match of the championship, which is scheduled in LA on Monday night, and approximately four weeks before the Thanksgiving break, among the peak times to fly in the United States.

Strain on American aviation helped end a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the halt had entered its fifth week and affected flight services, including aviator instruction.

It led a number of air traffic controllers to stay home on the identical date on January 25, 2019, briefly halting movement at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

On that date, Donald Trump, who at the time was in his first term as leader, consented to approve a short-term spending bill, effectively ending the federal closure after 35 days.
