The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to determine whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections conclude.

"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful if I denied it," the governor remarked when pressed about giving serious thought to a White House bid post the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not."

The governor's tenure as California's leader wraps up in early 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he emphasized that any choice is not imminent.

"Fate will determine that," he remarked.

Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary

Newsom has come to the forefront as a prominent opponent of the current federal leadership, using his online platforms and pushing a proposition that would boost Democratic House seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This move has invited attacks from political opponents.

Federal Funding Dispute

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor does not care about the state's residents in a recent interview on a major news network. Duffy disclosed a strategy to pull federal funds from the state and suggested eliminating the power to grant trucking licenses.

"I'm about to pull $160 million from the state," he declared, following a this week's tragic collision in California involving an unauthorized commercial driver that led to three deaths and injured individuals.

His administration highlighted that the national authorities had approved the individual's authorization repeatedly, which permitted him to obtain a trucking license under national regulations.

Duffy had before stated he was blocking additional funds from the state for failing to implement linguistic standards for commercial drivers.

Strong Response from the Team

"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand federal law," Newsom's office said in a previous statement countering the secretary's comments. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: The state's truck drivers had a death rate much lower than the national average. Texas – the sole state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."

Public Opinion and Campaign Considerations

A recently conducted survey showed that 72% of Democrats and 48% of all registered voters believed that the governor should run for the White House in 2028. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has risen to an mean of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has fallen from an mean of previous highs to current figures.

In previous months, the governor stated while traveling several key regions that he had "no clue" about his plans for 2028.

He mentioned his earlier challenges, including being found to have a learning disability at the early childhood.
