Israelis mark second remembrance of October 7th incident as Palestinian peace negotiations proceed
Israelis have gathered around the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-led offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the war in Gaza.
The incident led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel answered by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are considered reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our violent opponents have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on that day.
He also vowed to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will never again present a risk to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership postponed state memorials until October 16th - after the end of the festive season - but ceremonies still took place around the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the families of Israelis who died in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was aired across Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held across the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to review the terms of the proposal.
A prominent Palestinian official involved in the discussions revealed that an night meeting of indirect talks began at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative said the day's discussions concluded without concrete outcomes, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.
He noted that the talks are "difficult and have not yet achieve any real breakthrough," but pointed out that mediators are striving to close the disparities between the two sides.
Essential Issues in Discussions
- A lasting ceasefire
- The exchange of the hostages still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for assistance deliveries
- Future governance of the area
Public Sentiment
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member lived through the incident on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were lost their lives and dozens more were abducted by Hamas militants - explained: "No location seems like home any longer and until all the hostages are released none of us will be secure."
"When we see all home returned, we can breathe anew. Then we can commence rebuild," she added.
Near the prime minister's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to express their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel states forty-eight stay in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be alive.
Activist Atalia Regev explained: "We must do any agreement necessary for the captives to be released. But we truly desire promises that we will be secure."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that about seventy percent of the population prefer the conflict to conclude in return for the freedom of the hostages.
Gaza Conditions
At the area of the gathering, mourners came together to pay their respects.
From the site, the sound of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the intense Israeli bombardment continued.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the dawn of that day in the western neighborhood, Rimal and Nasr areas and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.
"Once the evening comes, the anxiety arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack previously, described.
"My family are fearful of the bombings. All the night we are lying together, clinging, especially my youngest child who rests his face on me the entire evening."
"Every second we look at the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."
Medical Situation
The healthcare center in the urban area announced it had received the remains of several people by the afternoon, including three who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.
Another medical facility in the south region of Khan Younis indicated another two dead people had been delivered. An individual was died by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the southern area, health workers stated.
