New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities issued security footage Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday in the area between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
He signed with New York as a new signing in March and was projected as an important component of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
