Nutrition Assistance Expected to Cease for Over 40 Million Amid Ongoing Government Closure

The United States Department of Agriculture declared this past weekend that monthly food benefits through a critical national welfare initiatives are not going out next month due to the ongoing government funding lapse.

Closure Continues Into 25th Day

The funding lapse lasted its 25th day at the time of the statement, in response to demands from hundreds of House Democrats asking the department to utilize emergency reserves to cover next month's benefits.

“Ultimately, the well has run dry,” the department confirmed. “At this time, no payments will be distributed” on 1 November.

Millions Affected

More than 41 million individuals count on these food benefits, per official statistics. In certain states, like one southwestern state, reliance on SNAP is as high as one-fifth of the population.

A memo obtained by a major news agency showed that the department chose not to tap contingency funding for November food benefits.

Legislative Deadlock

Lawmakers from both parties continue to disagree about the way to support and resume government operations.

A statement from the director at a prominent policy organization noted that federal leadership had opportunities to act sooner to prevent benefits from running out.

“Officials were able and expected to made moves weeks ago to be prepared to use these funds,” the remarks concluded. “Conversely, they might decide against it for potential political benefit” as Republicans seek to pressure Senate Democrats to approve legislation to restart the federal government.

Local Responses

Executives in two affected states declared states of emergency in recent days to allocate funds to address food insecurity expecting SNAP benefits not being issued during the upcoming period.
