In a recent appearance, star Jude Law stated he had no concerns about backlash for playing the Russian leader in a cinematic adaptation. This production, though, could coincide so closely with the mythologized image promoted by Russian state media that, within Russia, it reads as a compliment rather than a challenge.

The Manufactured Strongman

For years, the Russian political apparatus and the country's pop-culture machine have collaborated to forge a tailor-made version of the president. This figure is a political superhero without age or mistakes, a former spy reimagined as a local 007 who always knows beyond what he shows.

Screen-Based Support

One recent example is a television show launched last fall, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a fictional security officer inexplicably chosen to “rescue” the nation from disorder. While the character's name a different name, the implication is unmistakable: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

International depictions often end up reinforcing this identical story instead of debunking it. An adaptation inspired by a bestselling satirical novel aims to undermine the Putin cult by presenting him as a symptom but as a symptom, moving the narrative weight to the political machinery around him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

On screen, Putin is presented as having been picked by influential figures to steady the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and practically plead him to become president. He replies is that he would rather govern from the background, seeking permanent power.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. Historically, none of this took place.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one actually pleaded with Putin to accept the role. The position was in essence a casting call with no shortage of candidates. At the centre to the selection stood an influential oligarch from the previous administration who planned to control the state de facto.

• His list featured several politicians, among them a reformer later murdered and a security service director.
• Per a journalist who studied Putin’s biography, the future president simply fitted the required parameters: obedient, from the security services, and politically neutral.
• A businessman familiar with the events said the key criterion was controllability and loyalty, not strength.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Experts agree that the notion of him as a master operative was built after the fact. Claims about his “recruitment work” in Dresden do not stand up to scrutiny. Fundamentally, he handled paperwork and routine duties, a mid-level functionary not engaged in actual agent work.

Curiously, the shift to depicting him as a “spy” may in part have been triggered by Daniel Craig’s arrival as James Bond. His harder version led local outlets and social media to draw visual parallels with Putin. Mashup posters replacing the actor's likeness with Putin’s surfaced on Moscow streets, fueling the increasing trend to see him as a local secret agent.

A Propaganda Win?

Given the casting, an actor well-liked by viewers there, the Kremlin are likely to seize the chance to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. Its omission of mass protests, the political rivals, or prominent activists from its narrative, even though it includes the past decade, is a welcome aspect for state propaganda.

Domestically, the president is often an omnipotent figure who never appears on screen. His influence is hinted at through photographs or calls “from above”. Now, he finally acquires a recognizable face—one that may inadvertently echo the exact legends it might seek to examine.
