Over forty-two million Americans are anxiously awaiting to hear if the federal government will utilize contingency money to supply billions of dollars in food aid.

Federal courts issued the Trump administration until Monday noon Eastern Time (5:00 PM GMT) to provide details about how it intends to pay for the SNAP benefits, also known as food assistance.

Financial support for the initiative is still uncertain due to the extended US government shutdown resulting from the inability of Congress to agree on a funding deal.

Regardless of the court decision or alternative solution, millions citizens have been deprived of essential food assistance since funding for the system ran dry on the weekend.

State Administration and Government Money

Although state governments manage the assistance, the programme relies on funds from the national administration, which has been unfunded and shut down since 1 October.

Courts in Massachusetts and Rhode Island determined that the USDA needs to use $5.25 billion (four billion pounds) in emergency funds to make at least partial payments to recipients on food stamps.

The program costs about eight billion dollars each month.

Legal Challenges and Administration Reaction

US President Donald Trump earlier stated he had instructed government lawyers to inquire with the courts how the government could legally fund food stamps, adding: "Even if we get prompt direction, it will unfortunately be delayed."

Sunday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a television appearance that the commander-in-chief wanted to receive guidance from the judiciary about how to legally move money around to support Snap payments but they could be distributed as early as mid-week.

"A procedure exists that must be adhered to," the Secretary said. "Therefore, we've got to determine what the process is."

Recently, the Department of Agriculture said it will not distribute food assistance funds starting November 1st because of the government shutdown, stating: "Resources are exhausted."

Legal Actions and State Responses

Half the states and the Washington DC sued the administration over the assistance suspension and contended that they have a statutory duty to keep the program running in their areas.

Separately, cities and non-profits also initiated legal action.

With uncertainty surrounding federal Snap funding, some states said they would use their state funds to support Snap benefits.
