The Divinity Developer Explains Its Application of Generative AI for Upcoming Divinity

The studio behind hit role-playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently shown its upcoming project, generating a wave of excitement within the player base. However, follow-up statements from the studio's lead designer have brought clarity to the narrative, focusing on the developer's philosophy toward machine learning.

A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement

In a new clarification, Larian's director detailed that the developer is employing generative AI for specific preliminary tasks. These involve enhancing PowerPoint slides, generating rough visual ideas, and drafting placeholder text.

Importantly, Vincke emphasized that the final material in the game will be crafted exclusively by real writers. "We are creating everything in-house," he said.

Our studio is constantly increasing our team of concept artists and are actively assembling writing teams.

As visual development is being specifically referenced — we currently have twenty-three visual developers and have positions available for more creatives.

Each initiative we do is supplementary and aimed at having people spend more time on the creative process.

Any AI system implemented properly is supplementary to a developer's workflow, never a stand-in for their craft.

Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path

The revelation of AI usage initially generated concern among portions of the player base. In response, Vincke issued additional clarification on online platforms.

"Our team utilizes machine learning to gather inspiration, just like we use search engines and art books," he explained. "In the conceptual planning process we use it as a rough outline for layout which we then substitute with original artwork."

He noted, "Larian brings on talent for their creative vision, not for their capacity to follow what a algorithm proposes."

Focused Uses for Machine Learning

Vincke had in the past outlined the team's focused strategy to machine learning, categorizing its use into key areas:

  • Automation of Tedious Tasks: This encompasses polishing mocap data, voice editing, and technical processes like adapting animations for different models.
  • Accelerated Iteration: Using technology to rapidly prototype basic mock-ups of mechanics to validate concepts prior to full development.
  • Long-Term Aspirations: Investigating how AI could in the future facilitate new forms of gameplay, specifically in managing dynamic reactions in a vast role-playing world.

He specifically noted that core creative areas — such as writing — are are in no way areas where the studio is cutting human involvement. Conversely, Larian is actively hiring in these exact fields.

"We are not launching a game with machine-made assets, and we are certainly not planning on cutting teams to swap them out with AI," Vincke stated definitively.
