The ice cream brand's Founding Partner States Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
The original creators of the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has announced how corporate owner Unilever stopped the introduction of a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that established the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced that he plans to independently develop the controversial flavor as part of an individual series highlighting causes the company has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Founders and Parent Company
This latest announcement deepens the continuing conflict among the world-famous dessert company with its corporate parent, the British consumer goods giant which acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders have claimed how the parent company and its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Sorbet becoming an Emblem for Solidarity
The entrepreneur announced via social media that he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for consumer ideas for the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder commented in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol of solidarity with Palestinians because of its coloration, that mirror the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Activism plus Current Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which originally established in 2016 for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts plus Future Intentions
The founder indicated how he will create other ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which the company was silenced from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down from the company recently, following many years of involvement, mentioning worries regarding how the company's autonomy had been undermined following corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen remarked how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence so that it can achieve the social mission, the values that it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to media outlets.
