The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, unveiled a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by artist the talented musician. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the excitement and energy that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, the creators has stated that the series will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
