In a significant escalation, Ukrainian forces reportedly used long-range Storm Shadow missiles to target and hit a key Russian oil processing facility. This strike occurred on Thursday, as stated by the Ukrainian military command.

Attack Particulars and Strategic Impact

The targeted facility, the Novoshakhtinsk oil plant, was said to be hit, with multiple blasts recorded at the location. This marks not the first instance where Ukraine has utilized these advanced British-supplied missiles to hit targets on Russian soil.

Ukrainian officials emphasized that the Novoshakhtinsk plant serves as one of the primary providers of fuel products in Russia's south and is actively engaged in providing for the armed forces of the Russian Federation.

Diplomatic Developments on the War Front

In a related development, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Thursday that he held “very good” discussions with envoys of former US President Donald Trump, namely Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The conversation focused on possible ways to end the war.

“It was a really good conversation: numerous specifics, good ideas, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy stated on a messaging platform. “There are some fresh concepts on how to move toward real peace closer, and it involves approaches, potential summits, and, of course, the timeline.”

Judicial Proceedings Inside the Country

In a parallel internal matter, a court in Russia has found guilty a pro-war activist and opponent of Vladimir Putin on charges of supporting terrorist activities. Sergei Udaltsov, leader of the Left Front movement, was sentenced to six years in a penal colony.

This case are said to be based on an article Udaltsov published in support of another group of Russian activists charged with forming a terrorist group. Udaltsov has denied the charges as fabricated and, after the sentencing, stated his intention to go on a hunger strike in defiance.

Foreign Prisoner Case

The Kremlin indicated it is engaged with French authorities concerning the fate of Laurent Vinatier, a French researcher currently serving a prison term in Russia and reportedly facing additional accusations of spying.

An official stated that Russia has presented a proposal to France in the case of Vinatier, and now “it is in France’s court.” French President Emmanuel Macron’s office confirmed he is closely following the situation, with all government services mobilised to provide consular support and advocate for his release at the earliest opportunity.

A theatre in Mariupol, which was destroyed in a 2022 Russian airstrike while many civilians were sheltering in its cellar, is scheduled to open its doors again. Authorities in control have heralded the rebuilding as a symbol of recovery.

Conversely, previous staff from the theatre have called the reopening as “a macabre spectacle.” This project is part of a wider Kremlin effort to showcase its administration in seized territories, a process accompanied by the detention or expulsion of dissenting voices and property seizures from local residents.

It is expected to open by the end of the month with a performance of a classic Russian story, following its reconstruction largely anew over the last 24 months.
