Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will End... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would become a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the acclaimed series wrapping up—and a second season already in development—the writers' room reflected on the fan response and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Fan Response
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and audience predictions about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Will Vince Gilligan See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff aren’t being guided by public opinion, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… sort of.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to discard a good idea for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Then again, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to open her eyes with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.
Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
